Atalya Laufer’s works typically encompass drawings and ready-mades. Art-related historical material, original documents or reproductions are used and transformed into new a-historical works. Interested in the process of making and observing art, she plays with biographies and works of other artists to create new works that seem very much her own.
Thus, the identity of the artist and the original work is often ambiguous and seen from a non-hierarchical perspective. They engage the tensions between fact and fiction, past and present & manipulation and decoration. Taken out of their context, drawings, collages and stories become malleable and are fictionalised. Laufer works are neither biographical nor entirely fictitious, they act as playful commemorative spaces for her perusing and research.
