“Drafts” is a further inquiry into the 17th -18th Century Japanese “Shunga” tradition. It continues where “Censorship” left off. Reddish graph paper provides the backdrop and backing for left-over hands, feet, patterned fabrics and hair-dos of previous artwork. The graph paper both references rigidity and hierarchy, yet also lightness and sketching. Unlike the images in “Censorship,” which were clearly structured, “Drafts” seems to have grown organically. Without limits or purpose, they are hybrids that seem figurative and abstract.

Developed together with Robert Bader, this computer application allows users to create an endless amount of collages based on fragmented Japanese Shunga prints. In order to create collages, one can rotate, enlarge and try to precisely place each piece by swiping a finger on a mobile screen. This mocks the hours and days of contemplations in the studio. The “precious” collage and artwork is minimized into a passing bit of fun. The transitory collages scrolled upward and disappeared even as the work was being created.
